Week 1: Introduction

Hi, my name is Seth Strout.

I am a senior here at the University of Oklahoma. I have lived in Norman, Oklahoma the entire twenty-three years I have been on this earth. It is strange compared with people who moved here to go to OU. Soccer has been a passion for me my entire life. I have been playing since I was five years old and have loved every second of it. I have collected many different team scarves that I use for decorations in my bedroom. I am a big fan of the new semi-pro team located in Oklahoma City known as FC Energy.

(FC Energy Crest: Wikipedia)

One thing many people don't know about me is that I have a fraternal twin named Alex. He is about five inches taller than me so unlike identical twins it is relatively easy to tell the two of us apart. My family also has a dog named Nathan (I do know it is weird that he has a human name) who is the biggest teddy bear, however, he will let you know where his territory is and if you are allowed to be there.

I am currently majoring in mechanical engineering and am loving it. I initially started as an engineering physics major and found it too individualized. I thrive much better in a social atmosphere than a solitary one. This semester will be my last semester here at OU, it has been a long and arduous journey but has taught me so much. I am very excited to see what new opportunities I will have when I graduate. I hope to travel around the country for a little while to get a good feel of what kind of cities that I can see myself settling down in.

I am really excited about this class because I have never experienced blogging before. I think it will be an interesting experience and will help me hone my story telling skills.

  1. Hello Seth!
My name is Morgan Maddox and I happen to also be a senior at the University of Oklahoma. In addition, I am also a huge soccer fan! I grew up playing it all my life and I almost played at the collegiate level, but did not due to medical reasons! I have been t wanting to watch the OKC Energy play! I admire your choice in majors, any type of engineering requires way too much math in my opinion! Congratulations on being a few months away from graduation and I wish you the best with your future travels, that sounds exciting!

  2. Hey Seth,
Looks like the three of us are in good company as seniors, but you'll beat me to the punch when it comes to graduating. Considering how much you enjoy soccer, I'm sure you enjoyed the World Cup. It's a shame we couldn't get past Belgium. I happened to be in Italy at the time, and I can still see the disappointment on Italians' faces when they lost to Uruguay. Thanks to Suárez, Uruguay quite literally took a bite out of Gli Azzurri. In any case, I hope to read more of your writing soon!

  3. I am always glad to meet up with engineering students, Seth - super! My husband (who is a meteorologist) has convinced me that I really SHOULD have been an engineer, and he just might be right: I am so impressed by the creativity that engineering demands plus the practical problem-solving skills ... it's like magic, but done with science instead of incantations and secret ingredients! Anyway, I hope you will like this class. There are so many different directions you can go with the reading and with the projects in here, so I am guessing you will find the path that is right for you! Enjoy!!!

Also, I have to say: LOVE THE EMBLEM. "Labor Omnia Vincit" is one of my favorite Latin mottoes!I had no idea it was the motto of a soccer team in OKC... absolutely cool! I think I am going to have to include this in my Latin blog this week, so thank you for sharing that! Wonderful! It's the state motto of Oklahoma also:
    Labor omnia vincit

  4. Hi Seth! I am glad we are in the same group this week. It is crazy that out of the three of us in the group for Week 2, that you and Christian both have twins! I love that you are a mechanical engineering major. I often hear form my engineering friends that they cannot write very well. However, from your stories that I have read, you are an awesome writer! I can't wait to read more of your work.

  5. Hi Seth! I’m sure you have a different perspective on Norman than most of us have since you’re a townie. Originally, I’m from Lafayette, Indiana, which is right across the bridge from Purdue University. The absence/presence of college students definitely makes a huge difference there, and I’m sure it’s the same for Norman. Congratulations on your upcoming graduation! That’s so exciting!

  6. Wow! I can't imagine being a mechanical engineer major, that must be very difficult and time consuming. What do you plan on doing after you graduate then? Are you planning on staying in Norman then since you have been here for so long?
Additionally, I am also a fan of the OKC Energy! I hope they get more popular this year!!
Anyways, it was great getting to learn a little bit about you! I hope you have a great semester.

  7. Well congratulations on your last semester! And it sounds like an awesome idea traveling around to different cities and being able to experience them before you take a full time job. I have really been wanting to go to an Energy game and I am glad to see that I am not the only one. I am a chemical engineering major and I know how nice it can be to have a class like this where the studying can actually be entertainment. I hope you enjoy your last semester!

  8. You sound like the kind of person I would hang out with. I always enjoy meeting new social people. Sometimes I wish this class would actually get together so that we could all meet. Congratulations on this being your final semester here at OU. Good luck to all of your future prospects. I hope that you are very successful!

  9. Hi Seth! It was almost strange reading this because we have so much in common. I graduate this semester, love soccer, and am an engineering major as well (I'm even 23, super weird). It's always fun to meet someone who has a passion for soccer because that doesn't happen very often around here. I've been a Chelsea fan for 15 years now and make the premier league a part of each of my weekends. I'm curious to hear who your favorite club is and I hope you have a great last 9 weeks before you graduate!

  10. Hi Seth, I bet it is really weird being from here and not sharing the same excitement for some things compared to others not from here. I’ve always liked soccer but more in the playing aspect, I don’t often watch the games. You’re a senior? How exciting! I’m very excited to graduate and I can only assume that you feel the same. Good luck on your last semester!

  11. Hey Seth! It is nice to meet you! I have never really gotten into soccer, but since OKC has a team I really want to give it a shot! Have you been to a lot of games? It sounds like a bunch of fun. I can't believe that you are almost done with school! You said you want to travel the country, where do you want to go? Thankfully our country has a lot of variety when it comes to scenery and people so everywhere you go is completely different! Good luck on your last semester and good luck with all of your future endeavors.

  12. Hey Seth,
Thats cool that you've lived in Norman forever! I bet you know where everything is. Do you still play soccer today, or ever wanted to play professionally at some point? Congrats of graduation! It seems like everyone is graduating this year except for me. Oh well, I guess my time will come haha.

  13. Hey Seth, I am also going to finish up in Mechanical Engineering this semester. Congratulations! It is pretty exciting to say the least. I am not a huge soccer fan but I will support anything that is OKC related. I drive by McGuinness a lot whenever I go to work, so maybe I will have to check out one of their games. Traveling a lot right now sounds like a great plan! Living in one place is such a foreign concept to me, but I can definitely see where it would have its advantages. Good luck, I hope you put that degree to good use!

  14. Seth,

Congratulations on almost being done! I'm commenting on this post 10 weeks into class, and I can only imagine how excited or stressed you probably are at this point. I'm a science major, so I can only imagine the kind of course work you've had to endure over the years in engineering. I think that it's awesome that you want to travel after graduation instead of just settling in Norman, or in Oklahoma in general, and that you want to broaden your horizons. Good luck with your future, and I hope you've enjoyed this class as much as I have!

  15. So engineering physics is more individualized, you say? That’s interesting. I know through friends that Mech E and Chem E both typically involve more group work, so I figured that all engineering fields worked similarly. It’s really interesting to see how different majors encourage differing amounts of cooperation among students. I know that my major English involves mostly individual work, and I’ve grown to prefer that since I like only having to rely on myself for things. Anyway, it’s awesome that you’re graduating in the spring. Have a great semester and a half!

  16. Hi Seth. It is great to get to meet you. Congratulations on graduating this semester! I am sure it must be a relief what with how difficult engineering courses are. Are you planning on staying in the states while you travel or going abroad? Either way, I am sure that you will have a lot of fun. I'm graduating this semester too, but I don't really have a plan for next semester yet. Good luck with the rest of your time!

  17. Hi, Seth! Congratulations on being almost finished! This semester has seemed to fly by. It would be so great to travel some after graduation and see what type of city and atmosphere you like the most before deciding where to settle down. I'm sure the OU is experience is much different for you than for those of us who came here from a distance. Anyway, good luck with your last few weeks of college and everything that comes after!

  18. Hey Seth, I think its awesome that you love soccer. I played in high school, but I wasn't very good haha. What position did you play? Also, did you enjoy watching the world cup as much as I did? It's one of my favorite sporting events ever. Good luck with the rest of your semester man!

  19. Hi Seth! I can’t believe I haven’t been on your page before. I had no idea we have a semi-pro soccer team in Oklahoma. I don’t really keep up with soccer, but my sister used to play and one of my friends is super into it. I am jealous that you have a twin. I’m sure you get that a lot, though. Haha. I think traveling around the country would be a great idea to figure out where you want to be. If you like the cold and the mountains, I would recommend Wyoming, it is beautiful there! Good luck on your future endeavors!
